A second look at a game about second chances
The Alters launched on PS5 as one of the more distinctive survival games of the year. You are Jan Dolski, marooned on a hostile planet, cloning alternate versions of yourself to staff a creaking mobile base and maybe, somehow, get home. Even before the patch, the blend of narrative choice, base management and harsh resource pressure made it easy to recommend.
With the new free content update, it is time to adjust that verdict. On PS5, The Alters is no longer just a gem you should try; it is one of the must‑play survival stories on the platform.
What the update actually changes
The headline additions are Relax Mode, the Gamer’s Den module with its card game and noir side story, a fully featured photo mode, and a raft of quality‑of‑life tweaks like a smarter save system and extra customization.
Relax Mode is the most important change, especially for PS5 players who bounced off the original difficulty. The core loop is still about juggling power, repairs, research and the emotional needs of your different Jans, but the numbers are tuned so the game stops feeling like a constant knife at your throat. Timers are a little more forgiving, resource thresholds are less punishing and failure spirals are rarer. Crucially, none of this guts the tension. You still feel the pressure of an approaching storm or a failing reactor; you just have room to think instead of reacting in blind panic.
For those who liked the original brutality, the standard difficulty is intact and still demanding. The update does not dilute that experience, it simply opens the door for a wider audience to enjoy the same story and systems.
Gamer’s Den and the card game: busywork or meaningful addition?
The Gamer’s Den is a new base module that functions as a social hub, complete with an in‑universe card game you can actually play against your alters. On paper this sounds like pure fluff. In practice it deepens the rhythm of life on the crawler and gives your clone ensemble some much needed downtime.
The card game itself is surprisingly competent. It is not deep enough to stand on its own, but it is just intricate enough to turn into a playful power struggle between different Jans. The real value is how it becomes another angle on the central theme. A Safety‑obsessed Jan plays cautiously, a Risk‑taker Jan bluffs constantly, and your interactions around the table often reveal more about them than some of the scripted dialogue scenes.
Tied to this is a short noir‑styled storyline that you can pursue through the Den, complete with a monochrome filter and moodier lighting. It is not a huge narrative arc, but it functions as an introspective character vignette, refracting the same questions about identity and regret through a different visual lens. The Alters was already thoughtful; this side story makes it feel more playful about its own premise without undercutting the seriousness elsewhere.
Photo mode and PS5 presentation
Photo mode might sound like an afterthought, but in a game where much of your time is spent inside a moving industrial colossus on a violently beautiful planet, the ability to frame shots matters more than you expect. The mode lets you freeze storms, capture the crawler’s silhouette against the setting sun or stage awkward family portraits of your various Jans in the canteen.
On PS5 the performance was already solid, but with the patch the game feels more stable during heavy weather and busy base sequences. Camera and control responsiveness are steady even when multiple tasks and cutscenes overlap. The photo tools make that stability more visible. You can now stop, rotate around your scene and drink in the detail that previously blurred past while you were sprinting to avert disaster.
There are also new suits and cosmetic touches that push the cast a little further into visually distinct territory. Combined with the photo mode, they make it easier to read which Jan is which at a glance, which in turn helps you stay immersed in the fantasy of managing a crew of sharply different versions of yourself.
Relax Mode and the story’s emotional punch
The most surprising consequence of Relax Mode is how much better the story plays. In the launch version, the survival layer could crowd out the quieter scenes. You were so worried about oxygen and structural integrity that some of the conversations with your alters blurred into background noise.
Dialing back the punishment lets those scenes breathe. You have time to sit in the Gamer’s Den, hear out an anxious Jan who resents being created for a single purpose, or follow a thread of dialogue to its conclusion without resenting the minutes you are not gathering resources. The writing has always been the heart of The Alters, and the update finally gives it the space it deserves.
Importantly, the game does not become a walking simulator. Even in Relax Mode, major choices still carry weight, and poor planning can absolutely leave you limping through the late game. The difference is that failure usually feels like the result of your decisions, not an invisible numbers game running away from you.
Smarter saves and cleaner pacing
The revamped save system is one of those unglamorous upgrades that completely changes how approachable the game is. Autosaves are more intelligently placed and better labeled, and manual saves slot cleanly into that structure instead of feeling like a roulette wheel.
For PS5 players, this is huge. The original pacing could be brutal if life pulled you away from the console mid‑session. Losing a significant chunk of progress because you dared to step away from the TV undermined the game’s attempt at mounting dread. Now, the flow from story beat to story beat is smoother. You can experiment more, push a risky plan just to see if it works, knowing you are less likely to be punished with tedious repetition if it fails.
It also makes The Alters a better fit for shorter play sessions. You can knock out a few in‑game tasks, resolve a dispute between Jans, maybe play a couple of rounds in the card game and feel like you have actually moved the story forward, even if you only had thirty minutes.
Does the update fix the original problems?
The Alters was never a broken game, but it did have rough edges. The learning curve was steep, late‑game stress spirals could be exhausting and some players bounced off the constant pressure. The new update directly targets those pain points.
Tutorialization and UI clarity are improved, so it is easier to understand why a particular system is failing or why a certain Jan is on the brink of breakdown. The new mode and pacing tweaks cushion some of the sharpest difficulty spikes. That said, if you fundamentally dislike time pressure or resource management, the game still might not convert you. At its core, it remains about scarcity, tradeoffs and living with the consequences of creating people for their utility.
One lingering quibble is that base micromanagement can still get fussy in long sessions. Assigning tasks and hopping between modules on a controller is better than it was, but not perfect. You feel this most in the endgame when your roster of alters and available projects are at their busiest. It is a minor annoyance rather than a deal‑breaker, but it keeps The Alters from feeling as frictionless as the very best in the genre.
Verdict: from hidden gem to essential
Before this patch, The Alters on PS5 was a strong recommendation, particularly for fans of narrative survival and 11 bit studios’ previous work. With the December update in place, it crosses that final line into must‑play territory.
Relax Mode makes the game accessible without neutering its stakes, the Gamer’s Den and card game add unexpected warmth and personality, and photo mode plus stability improvements give the presentation a welcome lift. Combined with smarter saves and subtle balance tuning, the result is a survival story that finally supports the way people actually play games on console.
If you skipped The Alters at launch because you were worried about frustration or repetition, the current PS5 version is absolutely the one to jump into. And if you already finished it months ago, the new side activities and mode options are reason enough to come back and see what different choices look like when you are not clinging to survival by your fingernails.
The Alters was always about the idea that you might make better decisions if given another chance. Fittingly, this excellent update is exactly that: a thoughtful second shot that lets the game become what it always wanted to be.
