Jagex used RuneFest 2026 to reveal an early Unreal Engine RuneScape MMO and RuneScape Reignited, a December relaunch for the current game aimed at lapsed and active players.

Jagex revealed a new RuneScape MMO, but Reignited arrives first
Jagex used RuneFest 2026 to confirm that a fourth RuneScape MMO is in development, while also giving current RuneScape players a much nearer date to circle: RuneScape Reignited launches December 2, 2026. That split is the real story from the show. One project is an early, future-facing Unreal Engine MMO that outlets including IGN and CGMagazine report is still light on public detail. The other is a dated relaunch of the existing RuneScape, built around a fresh economy, new hi scores, an Adventure Guide, and a free access window from December 2 to December 12 without membership, according to IGN and CGMagazine.
The naming is already a little messy, and that matters for expectations. IGN reports that Jagex has not officially named the new MMO RuneScape 4, describing RS4 as a working title, while Pocket Gamer called it the fourth full-fledged series entry and PCGamesN described it as Jagex’s “fourth pillar.” For search, players will call it RuneScape 4. For accuracy, the confirmed fact is narrower: Jagex has announced a brand-new RuneScape MMO, early in development, built in Unreal Engine, with no release date currently public.
That leaves returning players with a practical question. Should they wait for the Jagex new MMO, or treat RuneScape Reignited as the actual comeback moment? Based on what Jagex has shown and what the reporting from RuneFest 2026 says, Reignited is the near-term on-ramp. RuneScape 4 is the long play.
RuneScape 4 is real, but almost everything important is still unannounced
The strongest confirmed technical detail about RuneScape 4 is the engine. IGN and CGMagazine both report that the new MMO is being built in Unreal Engine. TheGamer says Jagex described it as designed for a new generation of players, while keeping the depth, freedom, and community-driven feel associated with RuneScape. Pocket Gamer reported that the reveal came via a teaser at the end of the final RuneScape keynote and received loud applause from attending fans.
PCGamesN adds the clearest account of how the project appears to have emerged. In a roundtable presentation before the reveal, Dragonwilds executive producer Jesse America reportedly said an idea once planned for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, called Shadows of Ashenfall in 2027, was intended to add MMO-like social features such as persistent servers, high player counts, a social hub, and player-to-player trading. America told PCGamesN that early prototypes began to look like an MMO that deserved to stand alone as Jagex’s fourth pillar rather than remain part of Dragonwilds.
That origin story should shape how players read the teaser. It suggests RuneScape 4 may inherit some technology, visual thinking, or production lessons from Dragonwilds, but it does not confirm mechanics, combat, skills, quest structure, monetization, platforms, character carryover, or a launch window. IGN says there is no information on when it will be released. CGMagazine says it is in early development. Any assumption that it will replace RuneScape, merge accounts, or arrive soon is speculation unless Jagex later says so.
Reignited is a relaunch of the current RuneScape, not the new MMO
RuneScape Reignited is much more concrete. MMORPG.com reports that RuneScape 3 is getting what developers called a “relaunch” of the classic MMO on December 2. IGN says Jagex called Reignited a “defining moment” for the 25-year-old game, designed to bring lapsed players back and give existing players something new to rally around. CGMagazine’s press release-based report lists the central pieces: a Remastered Journey, an Adventure Guide, a fresh economy, brand-new hi scores, and a stated focus on players first.
For a completion-minded RPG player, the two systems that stand out are the fresh economy and hi scores. RuneScape has always been unusually sensitive to long-term accumulation. Years of skilling, bossing, clue scrolls, Grand Exchange movement, quest unlocks, and account progression create a living history, but also a wall for someone returning after a decade away. A fresh economy and fresh hi scores give Jagex a way to stage a new race without deleting the main game’s accumulated identity, at least based on the announced framing.
The Adventure Guide also matters because RuneScape’s greatest strength can become its largest onboarding problem. The game’s quest web, skills, minigames, bosses, and unlock routes are dense even by MMO standards. If Reignited is meant to serve lapsed players, guidance is as important as nostalgia. Jagex is not simply asking players to remember where they left off. It is packaging a structured re-entry point inside the existing game.
The 2027 RuneScape roadmap gives Reignited a progression spine
Reignited would be easier to dismiss as a reset-style marketing beat if Jagex had not paired it with a large 2027 roadmap. IGN reports that Jagex called it “the biggest roadmap in the game’s history,” with three story arcs tied to long-running plotlines. CGMagazine names those arcs as Hoard of Dragons in January, City of Gnomes, and Secrets of Karamja.
Those names are doing real work for returning players. Hoard of Dragons is described by IGN and CGMagazine as a sequel to Dragon Slayer, one of RuneScape’s most recognizable quest landmarks. City of Gnomes continues the gnome storyline that CGMagazine notes began in 2002. Secrets of Karamja introduces a new endgame raid, according to IGN and CGMagazine. The announced additions also include an Agility rework, new skilling and solo bosses, area expansions, and a new Grandmaster Quest.
That mix is a better signal than a simple nostalgia relaunch. RuneScape’s long-term appeal comes from layered account goals: quest capes, skill milestones, economic projects, boss logs, lore chains, and self-directed grinds. A Reignited player who returns for fresh hi scores needs reasons to keep building after the opening rush. A Dragon Slayer sequel offers historical pull. A Karamja endgame raid gives high-level players a destination. An Agility rework addresses one of the skills whose feel can define whether modern players tolerate the climb.
Old School RuneScape remains the control group for Jagex’s split strategy
Jagex is not making these moves in a vacuum. GameRant’s series history is useful here: the original game became known as RuneScape Classic, RuneScape 2 arrived in 2004 with a new engine and visual overhaul, Old School RuneScape launched in 2013 using a 2007 version of the game, and modern RuneScape is now commonly known as RuneScape 3 or simply RuneScape. That history explains why Reignited and RuneScape 4 can exist beside Old School RuneScape rather than automatically threaten it.
At RuneFest 2026, Old School RuneScape also received its own roadmap. IGN reports that Menaphos is finally opening after 20 years, The Fractured Archive endgame raid launches October 20, Hardcore Worlds arrive November 4, and 2027 will bring content including the continuation of the Fairytale questline, Quest month, Dungeons of Gielinor, a Mining and Smithing rework, Chosen Commander, and the Tower of Xorphoros. CGMagazine similarly reports Menaphos arriving in 2027 with the Master-level quest Fool’s Gold.
The lesson from Old School RuneScape is that Jagex can run parallel versions of Gielinor when each version has a clear contract with its audience. Old School RuneScape is the community-shaped legacy branch with its own cadence and identity. Current RuneScape is getting a relaunch and a systems roadmap. RuneScape 4 is the future-facing build. The risk is fragmentation. The benefit is that a returning player no longer has to pretend there is one correct RuneScape experience.
Returning players should treat December as the test, not the finish line
For players who left years ago, the most actionable date is December 2. IGN and CGMagazine report that full Reignited Access is available without membership from December 2 through December 12, which creates a low-friction way to evaluate the relaunch before committing money or serious time. If your main barrier was feeling too far behind, the fresh economy and new hi scores are the features to watch. If your barrier was confusion, the Remastered Journey and Adventure Guide will be the test. If your barrier was content direction, the 2027 arcs will show whether Jagex can turn a relaunch into a sustained year of meaningful goals.
For players only interested in RuneScape 4, patience is required. The sources agree on the broad shape: a new RuneScape MMO exists, it is early, and it is being made in Unreal Engine. They do not provide release timing, platforms, pricing, system requirements, or account migration details. Returning now because RuneScape 4 has been announced is therefore less about preparing an account for a confirmed upgrade path and more about reacquainting yourself with Gielinor’s quests, factions, gods, skills, and social rhythm.
That is where Jagex’s split strategy becomes understandable. RuneScape Reignited gives the current game a cleaner re-entry point at the exact moment RuneScape 4 becomes a visible future. Old School RuneScape continues serving players who prefer the 2007-rooted branch. Dragonwilds remains its survival-crafting sibling, with IGN reporting a Luminance update in December and the Blood Crystal Saga beginning in 2027. Jagex is building a wider RuneScape ecosystem, but December will show whether returning MMO players see that as abundance or as another set of choices to sort through before they can start adventuring again.
