Nvidia has launched DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27, making Visual Concepts’ annual basketball sim the first released game tied to the company’s new 3D-Guided Neural Rendering technology. Nvidia’s own GeForce post says DLSS 5 is available in NBA 2K27 for GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop GPUs, RTX 50 laptops, and GeForce NOW, with Visual Concepts and publisher 2K attached to the release.
The tension is in the naming and the hardware line. PC Gamer reported that NBA 2K27 graphics settings refer to the feature as “DLSS Neural Rendering,” while Nvidia’s formal language calls it “DLSS 5” and “3D-Guided Neural Rendering.” That may sound like branding trivia, but it matters because DLSS has already become a stack of features with different hardware requirements. A setting labeled around neural rendering, rather than another numbered upscaler toggle, suggests Nvidia wants players to understand this as a rendering technique that changes materials and lighting, not a simple resolution booster.
The other half of the story is access. Nvidia is limiting official support at launch to current RTX 50 hardware and GeForce NOW, but IGN and VideoCardz both cite an Nvidia forum statement saying the company plans to expand official DLSS 5 support to GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs after further RTX 50 optimization. There is no release date for that RTX 40 expansion. For now, NBA 2K27 PC graphics players on RTX 40, RTX 30, and RTX 20 cards should treat any broader compatibility chatter as either future-facing or unofficial.
The settings label points to a feature bigger than upscaling
The key word in DLSS 5 Neural Rendering is “rendering.” Nvidia says DLSS 5 introduces 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, which uses AI to bring real-time graphics closer to film-quality photorealism. VideoCardz describes the system as using game engine data, including geometry, textures, lighting, and motion information, to alter lighting and material appearance while retaining the scanned geometry of NBA players.
That distinction is important for NBA 2K27 because the visual target is familiar human detail. According to Nvidia and coverage of the launch, the feature is being used for effects such as skin subsurface scattering, hair lighting, and contact shadows. The same report says showcase examples included Cade Cunningham and Tyrese Haliburton, with attention on skin warmth, hair definition, contact shadows, and fabric detail on Haliburton’s compression sleeve.
Those are vendor and storefront claims, not independent image-quality measurements. Still, they line up with Nvidia’s stated technical pitch: DLSS 5 is not being sold primarily as a way to make a lower-resolution image cleaner. It is being presented as a neural layer that can modify how believable people, cloth, hair, and arena lighting look in motion.
Older Nvidia GPUs are in the plan, but only RTX 40 is confirmed
For anyone searching Nvidia DLSS older GPUs support, the confirmed answer is narrower than the early file discoveries might suggest. Nvidia’s forum statement, quoted by IGN and VideoCardz, says the company is focused first on optimizing DLSS 5 performance for GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, with model updates expected later this fall. After RTX 50 performance is “more fully tuned,” Nvidia says it plans to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series.
That means RTX 40 cards are the only older generation with official future support named in the current source material. IGN frames that as a move toward Ada Lovelace GPUs and specifically raises doubts about how something like an RTX 4080 will handle the feature, given the load seen on newer hardware. Nvidia has not announced official RTX 30 or RTX 20 support.
VideoCardz adds a useful cautionary layer. Before the official launch, the site reported that modders had managed to run the leaked DLSS 5 technology on RTX 40, RTX 30, and even RTX 20 GPUs, but performance and stability varied. That is a compatibility signal, not a promise. If you own an RTX 30 or RTX 20 card, there is no sourced basis yet to expect a clean official upgrade path for NBA 2K27 DLSS 5 Neural Rendering.
The practical read is simple: RTX 50 owners can access the feature now in supported conditions, RTX 40 owners have a confirmed but undated path, and RTX 30 or RTX 20 owners should not buy NBA 2K27 on PC expecting official DLSS 5 support unless Nvidia says so later.
Performance is the catch, even on top-end hardware
The biggest warning sign comes from early hands-on reporting. IGN says DLSS 5 improved NBA 2K27’s image in its testing, but carried a major performance cost on an RTX 5090. According to IGN senior tech editor Jacqueline Thomas, turning DLSS 5 on dropped the pre-frame-generation frame rate from roughly 57 to 60 fps down to about 37 fps, which IGN calculates as a 43% performance drop.

That discovery matters because it ties the in-game “DLSS Neural Rendering” label to Nvidia’s existing DLSS-NR naming. VideoCardz says GeForce driver 610.47 had already included hidden Profile Inspector entries named DLSS-NR, DLSS-NR Streamline, and DLSS-NR Presets months earlier, but without a publicly testable DLSSNR library inside a released game build.
The file leak also created an unusual pre-launch window. According to VideoCardz, the NBA 2K27 library became the first publicly accessible DLSSNR runtime seen inside a released game build, which led to modder experiments across multiple RTX generations before Nvidia’s official availability statement. That explains why the conversation around RTX 30 and RTX 20 cards moved faster than Nvidia’s own support list.
Confirmed support remains the deciding line. The file proved NBA 2K27 was carrying new neural rendering components. It did not prove stable support for every RTX GPU family, and Nvidia has only committed to RTX 40 expansion after RTX 50 tuning.
Sports games are a logical test bed for photoreal graphics
NBA 2K27 is an unusually sensible first stop for this kind of technology. Sports games put human likeness under a microscope every possession. It is also worth benchmarking before committing to it for serious online play.

The company has not given a date, and early performance reporting suggests the feature may need those model updates before it makes sense on older hardware.
If you are on RTX 30 or RTX 20, the story is even less settled. VideoCardz reported unofficial modder experiments on those cards, but Nvidia’s announced path stops at RTX 40 for now. Treat RTX 30 and RTX 20 Neural Rendering support as unannounced.
