Sony has revealed two limited-edition Grand Theft Auto VI PS5 controllers with Vice City-inspired white and black designs, September pre-orders, and a November 19 launch.

Sony is turning the GTA 6 controller into a launch-day event
Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially revealed two limited-edition Grand Theft Auto VI DualSense wireless controllers for PS5, and the timing says as much as the designs do. According to the PlayStation Blog, both the DualSense Wireless Controller – Grand Theft Auto VI Black Limited Edition and the DualSense Wireless Controller – Grand Theft Auto VI White Limited Edition will launch on November 19, the same day Grand Theft Auto VI is listed to arrive on PS5.
Pre-orders begin September 10 at 10:00 am local time, with PlayStation specifying 7:00 am PT and 10:00 am ET for the United States. The recommended retail price is $84.99 USD, ¥12,480 including tax, €84.99, or £74.99, depending on region.
That makes the GTA 6 DualSense controller drop a coordinated piece of launch hardware rather than an afterthought. Sony showed the pads during State of Play, then followed with a dedicated PlayStation Blog post from Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment. For a game already positioned by PlayStation around the message that Grand Theft Auto VI “plays best on PS5,” the controllers give Sony a physical product to attach to the marketing cycle before anyone even installs the game.
The white controller is Vice City at daybreak
The white Grand Theft Auto VI PS5 controller is the brighter of the two designs, and PlayStation’s own description frames it around Vice City’s daytime identity. The PlayStation Blog says the White Limited Edition “embodies Vice City at daybreak,” citing white sands, pastel skies, and a laid-back glamour.
Both controllers share the same GTA 6 design language. PlayStation says each has a shimmering, color-shifting finish meant to combine the colors of a Vice City sunset with the glow of neon lights. The controllers also include custom palm tree details molded directly into the shell, which is the most interesting craft choice here. Limited pads often live or die on surface treatment, but molded texture gives this one a tactile hook rather than relying only on color.
VGC reports that the controllers use the palm tree motif seen across GTA 6 marketing, with large VI Roman numerals on the touchpad. Eurogamer also notes the game name appears on the back, while Push Square describes the overall look as carrying GTA 6 logo theming around the thumbsticks and touchpad. The result, based on the official description and outlet reports, is a controller built around recognizable Vice City signals: palms, iridescence, purple-pink accents, and the central VI mark.
The black controller is the nightlife version, with a different retail path
The black PS5 DualSense GTA 6 controller is PlayStation’s after-dark variant. Sony describes it as capturing “the energy of Vice City’s iconic nightlife,” with the same color-shifting finish and molded palm details as the white model. VGC adds that the center of the controllers features a purple pearlescent material, reinforcing the neon-sunset look across both designs.
Availability is where the two models begin to split. The PlayStation Blog says the White Limited Edition will be available in limited quantities globally at direct.playstation.com and at participating retailers. The Black Limited Edition, however, is listed as available in limited quantities exclusively through PlayStation Direct where the service is available, and in other regions through select retailers.
That distinction is important because some secondary reports flatten the retail picture. VGC says both controllers will be available through PlayStation Direct in supported regions and that it appears each controller will then be available at traditional retailers, while also noting PlayStation had not confirmed which retailers would carry them. The official PlayStation Blog gives the clearest current guidance: expect the white model to have broader retailer availability, while the black model is tied more tightly to PlayStation Direct in regions where that storefront operates.
The hardware is familiar DualSense tech, not a new controller revision
Sony’s announcement focuses on styling and GTA 6 branding rather than any new hardware feature. PlayStationLifestyle reports that the devices function as normal DualSense controllers, with the standard DualSense feature set. The PlayStation Blog specifically points to haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, saying they respond to the action and provide dynamic resistance during Jason and Lucia’s story.
That means the value proposition is cosmetic, collectible, and experiential rather than technical. Buyers should not expect extra buttons, a revised battery, a pro-style layout, or a DualSense Edge-style feature set based on the published material. What is confirmed is the same DualSense foundation paired with Grand Theft Auto VI branding, molded palm details, and the iridescent Vice City finish.
For players who care about feel, the molded palm motif is the detail to watch. It is the one confirmed design element that may change the hand feel beyond standard color and print. That can be a lovely little object-design flourish when done subtly, especially on a controller you will hold for long sessions. Until people have retail units in hand, though, the exact texture depth and comfort are still unknown.
Sony’s merch strategy is riding scarcity, timing, and platform identity
PlayStation is treating these as a major merch moment because the controllers arrive at the intersection of three things Sony can control: PS5 platform messaging, PlayStation Direct sales, and limited-edition hardware culture. The controllers were revealed during State of Play, pre-orders open more than two months ahead of launch, and the pads release alongside Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19. That structure gives PlayStation a collectible countdown item for a game whose marketing is now accelerating.
VGC notes that GTA 6 marketing is “now in full swing” ahead of release, following Grand Theft Auto: An Extended Look on Netflix. Eurogamer reports that the extended reveal drew enough attention to temporarily crash Netflix and Twitch, where viewers were watching live reactions. Those are secondary reports, but they underline the same pattern: every official GTA 6 beat is being treated as an event.
Limited-edition DualSense history adds pressure. VGC points out that Sony has had some immediate successes, including the first Astro Bot controller run selling out in days, while other limited pads have stayed available much longer. VGC also cites the Concord DualSense as an infamous example that later became a collector’s item. Eurogamer separately compares the likely demand to prior limited PlayStation hardware such as the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary bundle, which it reported sold out in seconds.
None of that confirms the GTA 6 limited edition controller will sell out immediately. Sony has not announced production numbers. Still, the signals are obvious: “limited quantities,” a Grand Theft Auto launch tie-in, two colorways with different retail paths, and pre-orders opening at a specific time.
How to approach pre-orders without guessing wrong
If you want one, the safest confirmed window is September 10. PlayStation says pre-orders begin at 10:00 am local time, with U.S. orders starting at 7:00 am PT and 10:00 am ET through direct.playstation.com. The PlayStation Blog lists the U.K., France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg among regions where PlayStation Direct purchase information applies at 10:00 am local time.
The price is higher than a standard DualSense in many markets, so the practical question is whether the GTA 6 limited edition controller matters to you as a collectible or as your main pad for launch. If you already have a working DualSense and only care about playing Grand Theft Auto VI, the sources do not describe a performance upgrade. If you collect PlayStation hardware, prefer themed controllers, or want the pad that visually matches Rockstar’s Vice City campaign, this is the official one Sony is putting behind the launch.
The biggest unknowns are allocation and retailer lists. Sony has confirmed limited quantities, but not how many. It has confirmed participating retailers for the white model in broad terms, but the provided PlayStation Blog text does not name specific third-party stores. The black model’s PlayStation Direct emphasis may make it the more constrained option in Direct-supported regions, although that is an availability reading from Sony’s wording rather than a confirmed production comparison.
Grand Theft Auto VI’s controller moment is unusually physical for a campaign built around trailers, showcases, and platform messaging. A black pad for neon nights, a white pad for coastal daylight, both centered on a giant VI: Sony is selling the feel of Vice City before players reach Leonida.
