Square Enix has dropped a multi hour Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo ahead of launch. Here is how to access it on every platform, what content is included, and expert tips to squeeze everything out of your save before February 5.

What Is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined?

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a modern retelling of the massive PS1-era RPG, rebuilt with hand-crafted diorama visuals and streamlined pacing. The full game launches on February 5, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store.

Ahead of release, Square Enix has put out a free, surprisingly generous demo that lets you play through several opening hours and then bring your progress into the full game.

Demo Availability and How To Download

The Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo is free and live now on all announced platforms. You do not need a preorder to access it.

On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, search for “Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Demo” in the store and select the free trial listing. On Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, you can either search directly in the eShop or navigate via the Coming Soon / Featured banner for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined and choose the demo option from the product page.

The download size is comfortably below the full game footprint, but you should still clear out a decent chunk of space since it covers multiple story segments, early towns and a couple of dungeons.

Save data created in the demo can be carried into the full game on the same platform and account. If you plan to play the final version on a different system, treat this demo as a test run rather than a permanent start, since cross platform save transfer is not supported.

What Content Is In The Demo?

Square Enix describes the demo as offering several hours of play, and that tracks with early impressions from players who have reached the end of the trial. Expect to see the true beginning of the game rather than a chopped together sampler.

The demo starts on Estard, the quiet island kingdom that believes it is the entire world. You begin as the unnamed fisherman’s son, meet key companions like Maribel and Prince Kiefer, and explore the town, harbor, royal castle and surrounding fields.

You will get hands on time with the Shrine of Mysteries and the time travel premise. The demo lets you complete early tablet based journeys to the past, restoring at least one lost land and returning to the present to see how history has changed. In practice that means one full early arc, complete with dungeon crawling, boss encounters and some side events.

Combat, vocations and the new systems introduced for Reimagined are present in tutorial form. You will see how the traditional turn based battles now layer in the Moonlighting system, which lets a character lean into two vocations at once, and the Let Loose mechanic that acts as a burst of power when a character has taken or dealt enough damage. The game also teases the Monster Master vocation and monster summoning, though you should not expect deep monster collecting within the demo window.

The trial also includes a taste of the streamlined narrative structure. Dialogue has been tightened compared to the original release and optional vignettes and smaller quests are signposted more clearly, so it is easier to keep moving without consulting a guide.

Demo Bonuses And Carry Over Rewards

Your demo save carries over into the full version of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, preserving character levels, equipment, story progress and most obtained items. That makes this demo a real head start rather than a disposable prologue.

Square Enix is also stacking in an extra reward for using your demo save. If you import that save into the full game, you unlock a special Day Off Dress cosmetic outfit for Maribel. It does not change her stats but provides a visual flair that marks your character as a day one explorer.

This stacks with other preorder and digital purchase bonuses outlined on the official site. If you preorder any edition you can grab a Dragon Quest VIII inspired costume for the hero and three Seeds of Proficiency, which offer early stat boosts. Digital purchases also come with a Slime Shield variant themed to the platform you buy on. Digital Deluxe buyers get additional DLC and early access on top, but that is separate from the demo itself.

Platform Differences

In terms of content, the demo is the same across Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. You will play through the same story beats and have access to the same systems, including vocations and Let Loose.

Where the experience diverges slightly is performance and visuals. On current information and early impressions, the diorama style environments and doll like character models scale cleanly from handheld to high end hardware. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and capable PCs target higher resolutions and more stable performance, while Switch and Switch 2 lean on dynamic resolution and subtle tweaks to effects to keep things smooth.

Crucially, there is no cross save between platforms. A save created on PlayStation will only import into the PS5 version, Xbox saves remain on Xbox, and Switch saves stay in the Nintendo ecosystem. If you are undecided on which platform to buy on, consider downloading the demo on each and treating them as short technical tests rather than a single multi hour run you plan to carry forward.

Tips To Get The Most Out Of The Demo

If you want your demo time to set up a strong launch day playthrough, approach it like the real start of a long JRPG campaign.

First, do not rush straight to the Shrine of Mysteries. Spend time talking to NPCs around Estard. The writing does a better job than the original at hinting where to go next, and several characters seed optional events and later side quests. These conversations also give important world building that makes the time travel twists land harder.

Second, fight more battles than the bare minimum. The opening hours are tuned so that early stat gains and job unlocks come quickly if you engage with combat. This lets you experiment with vocations and see how Moonlighting works in practice, combining two roles to push your build in interesting directions. Treat the demo as a lab to discover whether you prefer straightforward damage dealers, support casters or hybrid roles before you are flooded with more options in the full game.

Third, play around with Let Loose instead of hoarding it. The mechanic encourages you to cash in the power spike regularly rather than saving it for some perfect scenario. Use those burst turns on mini bosses and tougher groups to keep pacing brisk and to get a feel for how it changes your normal battle rhythm.

Fourth, search dungeons and towns thoroughly. Chests, pots and bookshelves often hide Seeds and early accessories that will carry over to your full save. The streamlined map design means there is less maze like padding than before, so a careful sweep rarely feels like a waste of time.

Finally, if you are unsure about your long term platform choice, deliberately stop just before the demo’s end on your favorite system. That way you do not burn yourself out on the opening arc twice, but you still preserve a near perfect launch save that is ready to roll the moment the full game unlocks.

Why This Demo Matters

Dragon Quest VII was always beloved but intimidating, famous for a long ramp up before the story truly kicked into gear. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined uses this demo to prove that the new version understands modern pacing, while still retaining the sprawling, time hopping adventure at its core.

Whether you are a returning fan curious about what has changed or a newcomer wondering why this particular entry is such a big deal, the demo is a low risk way to find out. With several hours of progress and a cosmetic bonus riding on your imported save, it is also one of the most substantial JRPG trials in recent memory, and an easy recommendation ahead of the full launch in February.
