ARC Raiders opens the whole game for four days

Embark Studios says ARC Raiders will be free to play from October 8 at 09:00 UTC until October 12 at 08:00 UTC, 2026, across Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation. The important part for extraction shooter players is the access level: according to the official ARC Raiders announcement, the free period grants access to the full game rather than a limited demo slice.

That puts the ARC Raiders free trial in a stronger position than a standard weekend sampler. New players can squad up, scavenge, fight ARC machines, extract, and get a real read on the loop before paying. MMOHuts also reports that the trial includes the full game, while Eurogamer notes that Embark’s wording leaves no locked-content carveout for the trial period.

The timing is the hook. The trial starts alongside Frozen Trail, which Embark calls the game’s biggest update since launch. That creates a useful but slightly messy entry point: the game is opening its doors at the same time its map pool, progression systems, weapons, gadgets, and enemy roster are changing.

Frozen Trail’s headline addition is Pendola Pass, but access has a catch

Frozen Trail’s main draw is Pendola Pass, a new frozen map built around an old Italian village and transport hub beyond the Rust Belt, according to MMOHuts. The update adds locations including a supermarket, town square, observatory, and buried train depot, with flash freezes affecting the valley.

Embark’s official free weekend post confirms that new players can access Pendola Pass immediately if they team up with players who have already unlocked the map. Eurogamer adds the practical caveat: because Pendola Pass is tied to progression, free weekend players trying to reach it alone may need time before they can enter through normal unlocks.

For squads, that makes the free trial cleaner than it first looks. If one player in your group is already established, the rest can get pulled into the new map during the trial window. Solo players should expect a more traditional climb, at least based on the details currently reported. The confirmed fact is full-game access. The conditional part is immediate Pendola Pass access, which depends on grouping with someone who has already opened it.

The new map is built around pressure, interiors, and bigger ARC threats

Frozen Trail is adding more than a snowy backdrop. MMOHuts reports that the Frigate, one of ARC’s largest vessels, can be boarded near its crash site, creating interior fights, path unlocking, and opportunities for Raiders either to compete or cooperate. For an extraction shooter, that is the kind of space that can change match tempo quickly: interiors compress sightlines, make third-party timing sharper, and punish squads that move without clearing angles.

The update also introduces new ARC enemies: the Bully, the Skulker, and the Hydra turret, according to MMOHuts. Those names alone do not tell us exact health pools, weak points, or encounter tuning, and Embark’s free weekend post does not provide combat breakdowns. What is confirmed is that Frozen Trail expands the enemy roster at the same time it expands the playable space.

That is the right kind of trial environment for players who judge extraction shooters by pace. You can see how often PvE pressure interrupts looting, how readable enemy attacks are under player threat, and whether map events like flash freezes add tension or friction. None of that can be settled from patch notes. A four-day free trial is enough time to test whether the match rhythm works for your squad.

Weapons, gadgets, and progression are changing at the same time

Frozen Trail also touches the loadout and meta layers. MMOHuts reports that 15 weapons can now reach a fifth quality tier through Amplified Weapons, with branching upgrades such as alternate fire behavior, scopes, or larger magazines. The Raider Den is getting an Outpost extension with customizable modules, furniture, and a Research Workstation for deeper weapon modding.

New gear listed by MMOHuts includes the Stiletto battle rifle, Bantam revolver, Grappling Hook, Tether Launcher, Yank Grenade, camera gadget, instruments, and weapon stencils. Eurogamer separately describes the update as the first major overhaul of the metagame, citing changes to ammo, crafting, and a more standard battle pass structure.

The pass structure is also being reorganized. MMOHuts reports that the old Raider Decks system is being folded into Reward Passes, with a free pass, a premium pass, and a free Legacy Pass that combines existing Raider Deck content. A Collector Set DLC will bundle both passes with extra cosmetics and Raider Tokens. Those details matter for anyone using the ARC Raiders free trial as a purchase test, because the game you sample in October is also the game after a major progression reset of expectations.

The trial lands when ARC Raiders needs fresh squads and returning players

Eurogamer frames Frozen Trail as a major moment for ARC Raiders, noting that the game has lost its massive launch audience but suggesting the scale of the update could lure players back. Polygon similarly reports that the game still has an active player base while pointing to a drop in concurrent player count numbers since launch.

That context changes the free weekend. This is not simply a marketing beat attached to a cosmetic update. A full-access extraction shooter free trial can spike matchmaking, refill lower-level queues, and give returning players a reason to bring friends in while everyone is testing new systems. The best time to evaluate an extraction game is usually when the population is high and the meta is unsettled, because you get a wider mix of cautious looters, aggressive PvP squads, and returning players relearning routes.

For new players, the trial’s strongest value is practical. You can test how the game handles squad communication, loss, recovery, inventory pressure, PvE interference, and extraction timing without buying in first. If your group normally bounces off extraction shooters because early losses feel too punishing, this is the cleanest window currently announced to find out whether ARC Raiders solves that problem for you.

There are still caveats before you download

The first caveat is the Pendola Pass unlock path. Embark confirms immediate access for new players when teamed with someone who has already unlocked the map, but that does not mean every brand-new solo player will spawn into the new zone instantly. If Frozen Trail is your main reason to try the game, arrange a squad with an existing player or be ready to progress first.

The second caveat is competitive integrity. Polygon raised concern that opening the game for free could worsen ARC Raiders’ cheating problem, and reported that Frozen Trail was not expected to include additional anti-cheat measures based on its prior interview coverage. Embark did post an anti-cheat update on September 30, as listed on the official site, but the provided free weekend announcement does not detail new anti-cheat features for the trial itself.

The third caveat is time. The window is narrow: October 8 at 09:00 UTC to October 12 at 08:00 UTC. If you are on the fence, pre-plan your sessions instead of treating this like an open-ended demo. For extraction shooter players, the best test is several raids under different conditions: one cautious loot run, one PvP-heavy push, one squad session, and one attempt to reach or join Pendola Pass.

Eurogamer also reports that a PvE matchmaking test is scheduled for October 13 to October 20, after the free trial ends, disabling player-on-player damage for players who want a less hostile version of ARC Raiders. That test is separate from the ARC Raiders free trial, but it signals that Embark is experimenting with the game’s social and combat boundaries right after Frozen Trail arrives.

If you care about gunfights, extraction pressure, and whether a live shooter can support both returning veterans and first-timers, this is the window to watch. Frozen Trail changes enough of ARC Raiders that old impressions may not be fully reliable, while the free trial removes the usual purchase risk for four days.
