Aion 2's open server test starts September 17, but the window is tight

Aion 2's Launch Scale Test begins Thursday, September 17, 2026 at 6:00 a.m. PT, according to reports citing NC's test announcement, and the important catch is that this is not a full 48-hour beta. The Aion 2 September 17 test is split into two fixed six-hour sessions across two days, giving players 12 total hours to get in, make a character, push through early progression, and help NC stress its infrastructure before paid Founder’s Pack access begins later this month.

Invision Community and MMOHuts both report that Day 1 runs from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. PT on Thursday, September 17. Day 2 runs from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. PT on Friday, September 18. AllThings.how lists the first session as 6:00 a.m. PDT, or 3:00 p.m. CEST, which is useful for European players trying to plan around the morning Pacific start. Lagzapper’s timezone table additionally places the first window at 1:00 p.m. UTC, 10:00 p.m. JST, and 9:00 p.m. China/Singapore time.

The tension for MMO players is simple: this is open access, but it is compressed by design. MMORPG.com describes the event as an open launch scale test meant to make sure NC's infrastructure and systems are ready. MMOHuts similarly says the test is mainly about server and infrastructure preparation, not a full launch-style preview. If you are approaching it like a weekend beta with room to wander, the schedule itself will be the first system you have to respect.

How Aion 2 preload works on Steam and PURPLE

The Aion 2 preload window is reported to begin at 6:00 a.m. PT on Wednesday, September 16 and run until 6:00 a.m. PT on Thursday, September 17, according to Invision Community and MMOHuts. That puts the pre-download directly ahead of the first server opening, so players who wait until the start time may spend a meaningful part of the first six-hour session downloading rather than playing.

Access is described by multiple outlets as open to everyone. Invision Community reports that no keys, invitations, or registration list are required. MMOHuts repeats the same access terms and says the test will be available through Steam and NC's PURPLE launcher. Timesaver.gg quotes NC's own accessibility line as, “Open to everyone. No keys, no invites, no registration list,” while describing the test as the only pre-launch hands-on window for Aion 2 Global.

There is one practical Steam wrinkle. Timesaver.gg says Steam players should add the free Aion 2 Playtest App to their library and download it. Lagzapper describes the Steam process through the official Aion 2 store page, where players select Request Access under the Aion 2 Playtest section, and notes that the option may not appear in some regions or at all times. That creates a wording difference rather than a clear contradiction: the test is being reported as open, but Steam’s Playtest interface may still ask players to use its normal request-access button before the app appears in the library.

Lagzapper also cautions that NC had not confirmed the exact preload time in a public announcement at the time of its guide, while Invision Community and MMOHuts list the September 16, 6:00 a.m. PT pre-download timing. The safest practical move is to check both the Steam library and the PURPLE client as soon as the reported preload window begins, then verify again close to server opening.

Progress carries for one day, then everything is wiped

The Launch Scale Test has a short continuity rule that matters for anyone planning their route. Invision Community reports that progress made on Day 1 will carry over into Day 2, allowing players to continue the same characters during the second session. MMOHuts and Timesaver.gg report the same structure. Once Day 2 ends, however, all progression is wiped.

That wipe includes the core MMO motivations players usually chase during a launch rush: levels, gear, resources, and any other test-period gains. Invision Community states that nothing earned during the Launch Scale Test will carry into Founder’s Pack Early Access or the full launch. Timesaver.gg similarly says nothing transfers to Advance Access or the October 5 launch.

For progression-minded players, that changes the best use of the 12 hours. This is a poor place to grind as if you are building permanent account value. It is a better place to test class flow, UI readability, early quest pacing, combat feel, keybinds, camera settings, party friction, and how the game handles crowded starter routes. If you like completing zones cleanly, treat the test as a scouting run: learn where systems live, where early bottlenecks form, and whether your preferred class fantasy survives contact with the opening hours.

The Launch Scale Test disables major economy and account systems

NC is keeping the Aion 2 open test deliberately narrow. Invision Community reports that players will not be able to make purchases of any kind during the Launch Scale Test. The shop, Quna, passes, memberships, and payment portals will be disabled. MMOHuts reports the same purchase restrictions and adds that Founder’s Pack items will not be available during the test.

The player economy is also offline. Invision Community says the Marketplace, Quna exchange, and player-to-player trading will be unavailable. That matters because it limits what MMO players can actually judge during the test. You can evaluate early combat, leveling cadence, client stability, login behavior, and the feel of shared spaces. You cannot evaluate a functioning launch economy, trade liquidity, monetized convenience, market pricing, or how real-money-linked systems behave under a live population.

Cosmetic evaluation is also limited. Invision Community reports that the Closet system will be disabled, which means players will be limited to default outfits during the Launch Scale Test. For a sequel to Aion, a series whose identity has long leaned on character presence, faction silhouette, flight imagery, and avatar expression, that restriction is worth noting. The test may tell you whether your character moves and fights well, but it will not fully answer whether the cosmetic layer has the depth you want at launch.

The level cap is 37, so this is an early-game systems check

The Aion 2 server test has a level 37 maximum, according to Invision Community, MMOHuts, and Timesaver.gg. Content requiring a higher level will not be accessible during the Launch Scale Test. That cap is high enough to give players a meaningful sample of early progression, but it is not an endgame test and should not be treated as one.

MMOHuts describes Aion 2 as NC's Unreal Engine 5 follow-up to Aion, with flight again playing a major role, including in combat. The outlet also reports that NC is touting a larger world, large-scale PvE, more than 200 dungeons, raids, the Abyss, and expanded character customization. Most of those headline MMO promises cannot be fully measured in a 12-hour, level-capped infrastructure event with several account, trade, and cosmetic systems disabled.

The useful questions before servers open are narrower and more practical. How quickly does your chosen class settle into a readable rotation? Are quest objectives clear when zones are crowded? Does flight feel like a combat layer rather than a travel flourish? How does the game communicate upgrades, skills, and progression choices before level 37? If you are a dungeon-focused player, the test may help you judge early group feel if relevant content is reachable, but the sources do not provide a complete playable-content list beyond the level cap and disabled systems.

Steam players have one extra cleanup step after the test

The client path after the Launch Scale Test differs by platform. Invision Community reports that Steam players will need to uninstall the Aion 2 Playtest App after the test and download the separate Aion 2 client for Advanced Access, which begins September 30. MMOHuts reports the same Steam requirement and says PURPLE players will not need to take any additional steps, according to NC.

That distinction matters if you are planning to move from the free Aion 2 Launch Scale Test into the Founder’s Pack period. Several sources identify September 30 as the start of Founder’s Pack Early Access or Advanced Access. Timesaver.gg and Lagzapper list the global free-to-play launch for October 5, while Timesaver.gg describes September 30 through October 4 as the Founder’s Pack Advance Access period.

For Steam users, the practical checklist is therefore unusual for an MMO pre-launch event. Preload the Playtest App for September 17 if available, play during the two fixed windows, remember that the character data is temporary, then remove the Playtest App and install the separate launch client before September 30 if you are entering Founder’s Pack access. PURPLE users, based on the NC guidance reported by MMOHuts and Invision Community, should not have that same reinstall step.

Before logging in, set expectations like a tester rather than a tourist

The strongest confirmed fact around the Aion 2 launch scale test is its accessibility: the event is open, no paid pack is required, and no key gate is being reported by the main announcements. The second strongest fact is its limitation: two six-hour server windows, a level 37 cap, no purchases, no trading, no Founder’s Pack items, no Closet system, and a full wipe at the end.

Those limits are not incidental. They define what NC is trying to learn. MMORPG.com says NC is using the test to make sure infrastructure and systems are ready. MMOHuts frames it as server and infrastructure prep before Founder’s Pack Early Access. In that context, queues, login pressure, crowded quest areas, and rough edges would not be surprising, though the sources do not announce any expected outage or queue plan.

For players, the best preparation is simple: preload early, confirm whether Steam has surfaced the Playtest App or Request Access option in your region, log in at the start of the exact session if you want the most time, and avoid treating any progression as permanent. If Aion 2 is on your MMO shortlist for October, this test is most valuable as a focused systems audition. Learn the opening rhythm, test the feel of flight and combat, decide whether the early class kit fits you, and leave deeper judgments about economy, cosmetics, endgame, and long-term monetization for the launch client.
